Classes were cancelled for the rest of the day, so Demi found herself outside sitting in the sun, trying to figure out what happened that morning. There was no doubt now. The one causing the random fires was in fact the King. He used to be so silent, that they had forgotten he was there listening and watching. Now it was too late.

Demi sensed someone sitting down next to her on the lawn. Looking over, she saw that it was a worried looking Casey. "You skipped out on everyone pretty quickly after the Dean announced that classes were cancelled."

Demi stayed silent, not knowing how to respond.

"They wanted to hear the truth from you and now you've broken their trust."

She sighed. "I'm not ready."

"I think you should tell everyone where you're from," she said. "No one will judge you. I know they won't."

"They will."

"I understand," she said. "All I'm saying is that they don't trust you, but I know they won't judge you. It could help them understand you and the connection you have to the fire." There was a long uncomfortable pause. Demi sensed what Casey wanted to address, and she tensed for it. "Is that what that was? The fire going out when you reached out?"

Demi shrugged. "I don't know. I've been sitting here all day wondering the same thing."

"What do you have so far?"

"He didn't want to hurt me," she confessed. It was the only thing she was able to conclude. "He's angry at us for growing complacent, I think."

"What do you mean?"

"The visitors at the temple are getting fewer and fewer every year. Looking at the fire, I could feel his anger, but I don't think it was directed at me. When I lashed out at the flames, they went away. Instantly."

"So, he doesn't want to hurt you..." she mulled over.

"Yeah," she sighed.

"So, what now?"

"We need people to start honoring him and the other gods like we used to, and not at just their annual festivals," she informed her friend. "I just don't know how to do that without drawing attention to myself."

"You don't think that he's simply in a feud with Queen Eira?" she wondered.

Demi hadn't thought of that. It was entirely possible, but then why would the first fire be at his own festival? In fact, they seemed to be following her around. Was he trying to tell her something? Could it have something to do with her power?

"Casey?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm going to go practice in the woods again tonight. I'm going to need an electric blanket plugged in for me when I get home."

"It's getting that bad?"

"Yes. I don't know why."

Casey pierced her lips. "I'm going back inside where the air conditioning is. Do you need anything?"

"No, I'm fine."

She watched Casey walk back to the dorm building and then laid down in the grass to stare at the sky. The sun was sinking far into the West. "You know," she said to it, “your son wouldn't be so angry if you had shown mercy to your wife, but you may have done us a great service.
